(usually the one that developed it)


There are almost always major restrictions on its use


A software vendor delineates the specific terms of use in an end-user Llicense agreement


Its source code is almost always kept secret


Usually covered by copyright which provides a legal basis for its owner to establish exclusive rights.



*Open-Source* can be used by any application that supports them
